Evidence supporting the use of: Cannabis sativa oil
For the health condition: Eczema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cannabis sativa oil, often called hemp seed oil, has been explored as a supportive topical treatment for eczema (atopic dermatitis) due to its anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, and skin barrier-supporting properties. Scientific evidence for its efficacy is limited but growing. Hemp seed oil is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid, which help maintain the skin's barrier function. Disrupted skin barrier and increased transepidermal water loss are characteristic of eczema, making ingredients that support barrier repair attractive.
Small studies and preclinical research have shown that topical application of hemp seed oil may reduce dryness, itching, and inflammation associated with eczema. For example, a small randomized study (Callaway et al., 2005) found oral hemp oil supplementation improved skin dryness and itchiness in eczema patients. Additionally, laboratory studies suggest cannabinoids possess anti-inflammatory effects relevant to skin health, but these usually pertain to CBD or other cannabinoids rather than the oil itself.
Despite these findings, the overall evidence is still preliminary. While the oil is widely used in natural skincare for soothing and moisturizing atopic skin, large, high-quality clinical trials in eczema populations are lacking. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and limited evidence supporting the use of Cannabis sativa oil for eczema, it is not yet robustly validated by rigorous clinical research.
