Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium infantis
For the health condition: Eczema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bifidobacterium infantis is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its potential to support or treat atopic dermatitis (eczema), particularly in infants and young children. The rationale stems from evidence that the gut microbiome plays a role in immune system development and the pathogenesis of allergic diseases, including eczema. Several studies have explored the effects of various probiotic strains, including B. infantis, on eczema severity and incidence. Some clinical trials have shown that supplementation with B. infantis (often in combination with other probiotic strains) can reduce the risk of developing eczema in high-risk infants and may modestly improve symptoms in children with established atopic dermatitis. However, results are inconsistent, with some studies showing benefits and others finding no significant effect compared to placebo. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggest a possible preventive benefit when probiotics are given during pregnancy or early infancy, but the effect size is small and the optimal strains, dosages, and timing remain unclear. Overall, while there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of B. infantis for eczema, it is limited and not conclusive. The evidence is stronger for prevention than for treatment of established eczema, and B. infantis is usually studied as part of a multi-strain probiotic rather than alone.
