Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium animalis
For the health condition: Eczema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bifidobacterium animalis is a probiotic that has been studied for its potential effects on atopic dermatitis (eczema), particularly in infants and children. The scientific evidence supporting its use is limited but present, warranting a moderate evidence rating of 2 out of 5. Some randomized controlled trials have explored the efficacy of B. animalis (often as B. animalis subsp. lactis) in reducing the severity of eczema symptoms or preventing the onset of eczema in at-risk populations. For instance, a few studies have reported that supplementation with B. animalis in combination with other probiotic strains may modestly reduce the risk or severity of atopic dermatitis, especially when given during pregnancy or early infancy. However, results have been inconsistent, with other studies finding no significant benefit compared to placebo. The proposed mechanism involves modulation of the gut microbiota and immune system, which may help regulate inflammatory responses associated with eczema. Current clinical guidelines do not universally endorse B. animalis for eczema treatment due to the variability and generally modest effect sizes in existing research. Overall, while there is some scientific interest and preliminary evidence, more rigorous and larger-scale studies are needed to confirm efficacy and determine optimal strains, dosages, and timing. Thus, B. animalis cannot be considered a proven therapy for eczema at this time, but it remains an area of active investigation.
