Bifidobacterium adolescentis has been investigated for its potential role in supporting or treating eczema (atopic dermatitis), but the evidence is limited and not robust. Several studies have examined the impact of various probiotic strains, including Bifidobacterium adolescentis, on atopic dermatitis, especially in infants and children. Some clinical trials suggest that certain Bifidobacterium strains may help modulate the immune system and improve skin barrier function, potentially reducing the severity or incidence of eczema. For example, a handful of small randomized controlled trials and animal studies indicate that supplementation with B. adolescentis may reduce inflammation and allergic responses related to atopic dermatitis. However, these studies often use mixed probiotic formulations, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to B. adolescentis.

Moreover, systematic reviews and meta-analyses of probiotics for eczema generally conclude that while there is some benefit for certain strains (notably Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species), the evidence is inconsistent, and not all strains are equally effective. The overall quality of evidence is moderate to low, due to heterogeneity in probiotic strains, dosages, participant populations, and study design. There is no strong consensus that B. adolescentis alone is a reliable treatment for eczema, but it is sometimes included in multi-strain probiotic supplements aimed at this condition. More large-scale, well-controlled human studies are needed to clarify its effectiveness.
