Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aucubin is an iridoid glycoside found in various medicinal plants, most notably Plantago species (plantain). Its use in the treatment or support of eczema is primarily rooted in traditional herbal medicine, especially in East Asian and European folk practices. Herbalists have historically used plantain extracts, rich in aucubin, as topical agents for inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema, due to their reputed anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. However, direct clinical studies investigating aucubin’s efficacy for eczema in humans are lacking. Some preclinical research demonstrates that aucubin possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-microbial activities, which could theoretically benefit eczema by reducing skin inflammation and secondary infection. For example, in vitro and animal studies have shown that aucubin can inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines and promote skin healing, but these findings have not been robustly translated into human trials for eczema specifically. Thus, while traditional use is documented and there is some mechanistic plausibility based on laboratory data, the evidence supporting aucubin for eczema remains limited and largely unvalidated by rigorous clinical research.
