Aster species have a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially in East Asian herbal practices. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), certain species such as Aster tataricus (commonly known as Zi Wan) are used for their purported anti-inflammatory, expectorant, and soothing properties. Traditional uses occasionally include topical application for various skin complaints, including eczema, although the primary indications have historically been for respiratory ailments rather than dermatological ones. There is very limited documentation specifically connecting Aster species to eczema relief in historical texts, and it is not a major or widely recognized herbal remedy for this condition within TCM or other herbal traditions. Modern scientific validation for the use of Aster (unspecified) in the treatment of eczema is lacking. Few studies have examined Aster extracts for dermatological applications, and those that exist are preliminary, focusing mostly on general anti-inflammatory or antioxidant activities in vitro or in animal models. None provide strong, direct evidence for efficacy in human eczema. As such, while there is a minor traditional precedent, scientific evidence is insufficient, and the overall support for using Aster in eczema is weak and should be approached cautiously.
