Rating (out of 5): 2

Calotropis gigantea, commonly known as crown flower or "akanda," has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and folk medicine in South Asia for treating various ailments, including ear infections and earaches. Traditionally, the fresh juice or warmed leaf of Calotropis gigantea is instilled into the ear to relieve pain and combat infection. These uses are primarily based on empirical, anecdotal evidence and the plant's perceived anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

The scientific literature supporting these uses is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts from Calotropis gigantea possess antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects, which could potentially justify its use in managing earache or minor infections. However, direct clinical evidence in humans for the treatment of otitis (ear infection) or earache is lacking. No randomized controlled trials or robust clinical studies have evaluated its efficacy or safety when used in the ear.

Furthermore, the latex of Calotropis gigantea is known to be toxic and can cause irritation or allergic reactions. As such, while traditional practices endorse its use, the lack of strong scientific validation and potential for harm warrant caution. Modern clinical guidelines do not recommend Calotropis gigantea as a treatment for ear infections or earache.
