Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

The use of plants from the Asteraceae family (such as chamomile, calendula, and others) for the treatment of ear infections or earache is primarily rooted in traditional and folk medicine. Various cultures have used infusions, oils, or extracts from these plants for their purported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and soothing properties. For example, chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) and calendula (Calendula officinalis), both members of the Asteraceae family, have been included in ear drop mixtures in traditional herbal practices to relieve discomfort associated with earaches and mild ear infections.

However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of Asteraceae species for treating ear infections is limited and of low quality. Most available studies are either in vitro or involve combination herbal ear drops, making it difficult to attribute any benefit specifically to Asteraceae components. Clinical trials are scarce, and systematic reviews generally conclude that there is insufficient evidence to recommend these plants for ear infections. Therefore, while their use is common in traditional medicine, robust scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence base rates low on the scale.
