Rubus species, including raspberries and blackberries, have a history of use in traditional medicine for a variety of digestive ailments, including dyspepsia (indigestion). Ethnobotanical records from Europe, Asia, and North America indicate that leaves, roots, and sometimes fruits of Rubus plants were employed as infusions, decoctions, or teas to soothe gastrointestinal discomfort. The rationale for their use was often based on the astringent properties of tannins present in the leaves and roots, which were believed to tone the mucous membranes of the digestive tract and alleviate symptoms such as bloating, mild cramping, and diarrhea associated with dyspepsia.
However, clinical evidence specifically evaluating Rubus preparations for dyspepsia is lacking. The majority of available studies focus on the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, or antimicrobial properties of Rubus extracts, with little direct application to human indigestion. The traditional use is better documented than scientific validation, and the evidence for efficacy is thus considered weak (rated 2/5). In summary, while Rubus has a clear traditional role in the management of dyspepsia, robust clinical trials to confirm its efficacy for this indication are absent.
