Mucilage, a gelatinous substance derived from plants such as slippery elm, marshmallow root, and psyllium, has been traditionally used in herbal and folk medicine to support digestive health and soothe symptoms of dyspepsia (indigestion). The rationale behind its use is its demulcent property: mucilage can coat and soothe the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract, potentially reducing irritation and discomfort associated with indigestion. Historical usage is well-documented in traditional European, Native American, and Ayurveda medicine, where preparations containing mucilage-forming herbs were commonly prescribed for gastric irritation, heartburn, and mild gastritis.
However, while mucilage has a long-standing tradition of use for dyspepsia, high-quality scientific evidence supporting its efficacy is limited. Most modern clinical trials focus on its use for other gastrointestinal complaints, such as constipation or sore throat, rather than dyspepsia specifically. A few small studies and case reports suggest that mucilaginous herbs may relieve mild gastric irritation, but robust, large-scale clinical trials are lacking. As a result, the current evidence rating for mucilage in the management of dyspepsia is modest, largely reliant on traditional knowledge rather than strong scientific validation.
