Evidence supporting the use of: Catechu
For the health condition: Dyspepsia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Catechu (an extract from the heartwood of Acacia catechu or Uncaria gambir) has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for the treatment of various gastrointestinal ailments, including dyspepsia (indigestion). Historical texts and traditional herbal compendia describe catechu as having astringent, anti-inflammatory, and digestive properties, which were believed to help soothe the digestive tract, reduce irritation, and improve appetite. Its use as a digestive aid is primarily based on empirical tradition rather than rigorous scientific validation.
Modern scientific studies directly investigating catechu’s efficacy for dyspepsia are limited. Some pharmacological research indicates that catechu possesses astringent and possible anti-ulcerogenic properties due to its high tannin content and other polyphenolic compounds, which may theoretically contribute to mucosal protection in the digestive tract. However, there is insufficient clinical evidence from well-conducted human trials to confirm its effectiveness for dyspepsia specifically. Therefore, while the traditional use is well documented, contemporary evidence supporting catechu for dyspepsia remains weak, with most claims based on historical rather than scientific grounds.
