Bur-Reed (commonly referring to species within the Sparganium genus) has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where its rhizome—known as Sparganii Rhizoma or "San Leng"—is incorporated in herbal formulations. In TCM, it is primarily used to promote blood circulation, resolve masses, and alleviate pain, rather than specifically for dyspepsia (indigestion). However, because some traditional herbal blends for digestive complaints may include San Leng, there is an association, albeit indirect, with the treatment of dyspepsia. The rationale in TCM is based on the concept of resolving "food stagnation" and improving "Qi" flow, which are believed to contribute to digestive symptoms.

From a scientific perspective, there is very limited clinical or preclinical evidence supporting the efficacy of Bur-Reed/Sparganium for dyspepsia. Most available studies focus on its potential anticancer or anti-inflammatory properties, not on digestive health.
