Traditional healers have employed acacia gum as a demulcent—a substance that relieves irritation of the mucous membranes by forming a protective film—aiming to treat symptoms such as heartburn, mild gastritis, and general digestive discomfort, which would today fall under the broad term "dyspepsia." Despite its traditional use, there is limited scientific evidence directly supporting the efficacy of acacia gum specifically for dyspepsia. Modern clinical trials focusing on acacia for this indication are lacking. Some studies have investigated acacia’s role as a prebiotic fiber, noting its beneficial effects on gut microbiota and potential to improve general gut health, but these do not directly address dyspeptic symptoms. Most contemporary references to acacia’s use in dyspepsia rely on its historical application rather than robust clinical data.
