Alpha-galactosidase is an enzyme that is scientifically validated for use in supporting digestion, particularly for individuals who experience discomfort after consuming foods rich in complex carbohydrates (such as beans, lentils, and certain vegetables). These foods contain oligosaccharides like raffinose and stachyose, which are not fully broken down by human digestive enzymes and pass into the colon, where they are fermented by bacteria, often resulting in gas, bloating, and other symptoms of poor digestion.

Alpha-galactosidase works by hydrolyzing (breaking down) these complex carbohydrates in the small intestine before they reach the colon, thereby reducing gastrointestinal symptoms. The best-known commercial preparation is Beano®, which contains alpha-galactosidase derived from Aspergillus niger. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated that supplementation with alpha-galactosidase can significantly reduce gas production and digestive discomfort after ingesting high-oligosaccharide foods (e.g., DiNubile NA, 1996).

While alpha-galactosidase does not treat all forms of poor digestion, its efficacy is well-established for carbohydrate-induced digestive symptoms. It is not a general digestive aid for protein or fat malabsorption. No major safety concerns have been reported when used as directed, but it may not be suitable for people with galactosemia or certain rare allergies. Overall, the evidence base for its use in this specific aspect of digestion is robust, meriting a high evidence score.
