Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is increasingly recognized for its potential benefits in managing dermatitis, particularly atopic dermatitis. The justification for its use is rooted in scientific evidence, primarily due to its rich content of polyphenols, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). These compounds exhibit potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, which are relevant to the pathophysiology of dermatitis.

Several preclinical studies have shown that EGCG can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce oxidative stress in skin cells, both of which are implicated in the development and exacerbation of dermatitis. In animal models, green tea extracts have been demonstrated to alleviate symptoms of atopic dermatitis, such as erythema and skin thickening. Furthermore, in vitro studies suggest that green tea polyphenols can suppress histamine release and downregulate pathways involved in allergic responses.

Limited human clinical trials have been conducted, but small pilot studies and topical formulations containing green tea extracts have shown some efficacy in reducing itching, redness, and scaling in patients with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis. However, large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are still lacking, and therefore the current evidence is moderate (rated 3/5). Overall, while traditional use is limited, current scientific data provide a reasonable rationale for considering green tea as a supportive therapy for dermatitis.
