Trace minerals, including zinc, magnesium, iron, selenium, and copper, have been studied for their potential role in depression. Scientific evidence suggests that some individuals with depression may have deficiencies or imbalances in certain trace minerals, and correcting these deficiencies may support mood and cognitive function. Of these, zinc and magnesium have the most robust evidence, with multiple observational studies linking low levels of these minerals to increased risk or severity of depressive symptoms. Some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that supplementation with zinc or magnesium can have a modest, positive effect on depressive symptoms, particularly as adjuncts to standard antidepressant therapy. Iron deficiency, especially in women, has also been associated with depressive symptoms, and correcting iron deficiency anemia can improve mood in affected individuals. However, for many other trace minerals, evidence is limited or inconsistent, and supplementation in individuals without a documented deficiency is not broadly endorsed.

Overall, while the role of trace minerals in depression is scientifically plausible and supported by some clinical data, the evidence is moderate (rated 2/5), not conclusive, and supplementation should be targeted to those with known deficiencies.
