Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been studied for its broad antiviral properties, largely attributed to its polyphenolic compounds, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). There is some scientific evidence suggesting green tea and its extracts may have activity against cytomegalovirus (CMV), a member of the herpesvirus family. In vitro studies have demonstrated that EGCG can inhibit the replication of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) by interfering with viral entry, gene expression, and the function of viral proteins. For example, a 2011 study published in Antiviral Research found that EGCG suppressed HCMV infectivity in cultured cells, possibly by altering the viral envelope or blocking viral attachment and entry. However, these findings are mostly limited to preclinical laboratory studies (cell culture) rather than human clinical trials. There is a lack of large-scale, peer-reviewed clinical evidence showing that green tea or EGCG supplementation is effective in preventing or treating CMV infections in humans. Green tea is not a standard therapy for CMV, but its mild antiviral activity has sparked interest in further research. In summary, green tea does show some scientific promise in laboratory settings against CMV, but current evidence is preliminary and does not support its use as a proven treatment. It should not replace established antiviral medications in the management of CMV infection.
