Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has attracted scientific interest in the context of cystic fibrosis (CF) primarily because of its polyphenol content, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Laboratory studies, including in vitro experiments and animal models, have indicated that EGCG may partially correct the misfolding of the CFTR protein caused by the most common CF mutation, ΔF508. This mutation leads to defective chloride transport, a hallmark of cystic fibrosis pathology. EGCG appears to function as a "corrector," promoting the trafficking of the faulty CFTR protein to the cell surface, where it can partially restore its function. However, while these preclinical findings are promising, clinical evidence in humans remains limited. A small number of preliminary studies and case reports suggest potential benefit, but large, well-controlled clinical trials have not yet been conducted to confirm efficacy or safety in people with CF. Furthermore, the effective doses of EGCG observed in laboratory settings may not be feasible or safe to achieve through dietary green tea consumption alone. Historically, green tea has not been used in traditional medicine systems specifically for cystic fibrosis, as the disease was only described in the 20th century. The current scientific interest stems entirely from modern pharmacological research rather than tradition. In summary, there is some early scientific evidence supporting the use of green tea or its extracts for CF, but clinical validation remains insufficient at this time.
