Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid, has some scientific support for its use in wound healing, including cuts. Pantothenic acid is essential for the synthesis of coenzyme A, which plays a critical role in cellular metabolism and the repair of tissues. Several animal studies and limited human data suggest that vitamin B5 may enhance wound healing by promoting the proliferation of skin cells (keratinocytes and fibroblasts), increasing collagen synthesis, and stimulating the epithelialization process.

A few small clinical studies have investigated the use of dexpanthenol (a derivative of vitamin B5) in ointments or creams for wound healing. These studies report improved healing rates, reduced inflammation, and better skin hydration in minor wounds, abrasions, and post-surgical incisions when compared to placebo or standard care. However, the evidence is not robust—most studies are small, have methodological limitations, or are conducted in vitro or in animals rather than humans.

In summary, there is some scientific evidence suggesting that topical or systemic vitamin B5 supplementation might promote healing of cuts and minor wounds, primarily through its role in skin regeneration and repair. However, the evidence is moderate and not conclusive, so it is rated as 3 out of 5.
