Evidence supporting the use of: Fern-leaf yarrow
For the health condition: Cuts
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fern-leaf yarrow (Achillea filipendulina), like other yarrow species, has a longstanding history of traditional use for treating cuts and wounds. The genus name "Achillea" refers to the legendary Greek hero Achilles, who, according to ancient stories, used yarrow to treat the wounds of his soldiers. Ethnobotanical records and European folk medicine describe yarrow’s astringent and styptic properties, meaning it can help stop bleeding and promote wound healing. This is primarily due to the presence of compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and volatile oils found in various Achillea species.
Modern scientific studies on Achillea millefolium (common yarrow) have demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, supporting its traditional use. However, specific research on Achillea filipendulina (fern-leaf yarrow) is much more limited. Most of the available evidence is extrapolated from the better-studied common yarrow. There are no high-quality clinical trials directly investigating fern-leaf yarrow for treating cuts in humans. As a result, the justification for its use in this context is primarily traditional, supported by anecdotal reports and historical use, with only suggestive (not definitive) scientific backing for closely related species.
In summary, while fern-leaf yarrow’s use for cuts is rooted in tradition and some indirect botanical evidence, robust scientific validation specific to this species is lacking, so the strength of evidence is moderate but not high.
