Elkweed (Frasera speciosa), also known as green gentian, has a history of traditional use by Native American tribes and early settlers for treating minor wounds and cuts. The roots and leaves were often made into poultices or infusions applied externally to aid in wound healing. Ethnobotanical records, such as those compiled by Daniel Moerman and other historical sources, document that the Ute, Paiute, and other groups used elkweed as a topical application to promote healing of cuts, sores, and bruises. The rationale was often based on observed anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, though the exact mechanisms were not scientifically understood. However, there is little to no modern scientific research that verifies the efficacy of elkweed for wound healing. No clinical trials or pharmacological studies have been published that specifically evaluate the effects of elkweed extracts on wound repair or infection control. Some gentian family plants do contain bitter compounds and have been studied for antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties, but these findings cannot be directly extrapolated to elkweed without specific research. In summary, the use of elkweed for cuts is supported primarily by traditional knowledge rather than scientific validation.
