Evidence supporting the use of: Green tea
For the health condition: Crohn's Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been investigated for its potential benefits in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn’s disease, primarily due to its high content of polyphenols such as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). The scientific interest is based on green tea’s demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory activities in a variety of laboratory and animal models. Preclinical studies have shown that EGCG can inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6), suppress NF-κB activation, and reduce oxidative stress, all of which are relevant mechanisms in Crohn’s disease pathology.
In animal models of colitis, green tea extracts or EGCG supplementation have been shown to reduce disease severity, decrease mucosal damage, and limit inflammatory cell infiltration. However, while these findings are promising, clinical evidence in humans is limited. A few small pilot studies and case reports suggest that green tea or EGCG supplementation may help reduce inflammation and improve symptoms in some patients with IBD, but robust, well-controlled clinical trials in Crohn’s disease specifically are lacking.
Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some preclinical support for the use of green tea in Crohn’s disease, current human research is insufficient to draw firm conclusions about its efficacy. Therefore, the evidence rating is low (2/5), and green tea should not replace standard therapies but might be considered as a complementary approach with physician supervision.
