Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly by Native American peoples and later by European settlers in North America. It was commonly used to treat a variety of febrile illnesses, including influenza, colds, and coughs—especially those described as "spastic" or involving spasmodic coughing fits. The plant's use as a remedy for cough is based primarily on traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific evidence. Historical herbal texts attribute expectorant, diaphoretic, and antispasmodic properties to boneset, making it a popular remedy for respiratory complaints in the 18th and 19th centuries.
