For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ophiopogon root (Ophiopogonis Radix, known as "Mai Men Dong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine for supporting and treating respiratory conditions, including coughs. In Chinese medicine, ophiopogon root is considered to "nourish yin," "moisten the lungs," and "clear heat," which are thought to address dry or irritating coughs, especially those associated with dryness or deficiency. Classical texts and modern TCM practice frequently include ophiopogon root in formulas for chronic cough, particularly when accompanied by symptoms such as scanty sputum, dryness of the mouth, or throat discomfort.
Scientific evidence for ophiopogon root’s efficacy in treating cough is limited. Some pharmacological studies suggest that extracts from ophiopogon may have anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and mild expectorant properties, which could theoretically ease cough symptoms. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence mainly comes from laboratory or animal studies. Thus, while its use is deeply rooted in traditional practice and supported by centuries of empirical use, modern scientific validation remains limited.
In summary, ophiopogon root’s use for cough is primarily justified by its traditional role in Chinese herbal medicine, with a modest (but not strong) level of supporting evidence based on pharmacological studies rather than clinical trials.
