Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba), also known as Chinese date, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is commonly incorporated into herbal remedies for respiratory issues, including dry cough. In TCM, jujube is believed to nourish the blood, soothe the mind, and moisten dryness within the lungs, thereby alleviating coughs that are characterized as dry and non-productive. Jujube is often combined with other herbs in decoctions or syrups intended to calm irritation and support the respiratory tract. Historical medical texts from China, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing," mention its use for cough and throat conditions.

From a scientific standpoint, there is limited direct clinical evidence supporting jujube's efficacy for dry cough specifically. Some laboratory studies indicate that jujube contains polysaccharides, saponins, and flavonoids, which may exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties that could theoretically benefit respiratory health. However, robust human trials focusing on cough are lacking. Thus, while the use of jujube for dry cough is well-established in traditional practices, current scientific validation is minimal, and most support comes from historical and anecdotal use.
