Magnesium is scientifically validated as a treatment for certain convulsive disorders, particularly eclampsia, a life-threatening complication of pregnancy characterized by seizures. The use of intravenous magnesium sulfate is the standard of care for the prevention and treatment of eclamptic seizures, with strong evidence from multiple large-scale randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews. Magnesium acts as a central nervous system depressant, antagonizing NMDA receptors and stabilizing excitable membranes, thereby reducing neuronal firing and seizure activity.

Outside of eclampsia, the evidence for magnesium’s use in convulsions is less robust. Some studies suggest that magnesium deficiency may lower the seizure threshold, and case reports describe seizures in individuals with hypomagnesemia, which resolve upon magnesium repletion. However, for most forms of epilepsy or non-eclamptic seizures, magnesium supplementation is not considered a primary therapy, though it may be used as an adjunct if a deficiency is identified.

Historically, magnesium salts have been used as anticonvulsants since the early 20th century, but modern scientific validation is strongest in obstetric medicine. Overall, the evidence supporting magnesium for the treatment or prevention of convulsions is rated 4 out of 5, due to its well-established, guideline-supported use in eclampsia, but less so for other causes of seizures.
