Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vietnamese sophora (Sophora flavescens, also known as "Khổ sâm" in Vietnamese) is primarily used in traditional medicine, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Vietnamese folk remedies. Historically, various parts of the Sophora plant have been employed to address a range of disorders, mainly for their anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic, and antimicrobial properties. In the context of constipation, especially in children, Vietnamese sophora has occasionally been included in polyherbal formulas aimed at supporting digestive health and alleviating constipation. However, its use for this specific indication is based on traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation.

The evidence supporting Vietnamese sophora for treating constipation in children is limited. Most available data comes from traditional texts and anecdotal reports rather than controlled clinical studies. Some herbal formulations containing Sophora flavescens are used in Asia to harmonize the digestive system, but Sophora is often a minor component and not the primary laxative agent. Scientific studies on Sophora flavescens have focused largely on its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, with little direct research on its effects on bowel movement or constipation. Thus, while the use of Vietnamese sophora in this context has a traditional basis, there is a lack of high-quality evidence to strongly support its efficacy for childhood constipation.
