Thatch screw-pine (Pandanus tectorius), also known as pandan, has a history of traditional medicinal use in various cultures, particularly in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. In traditional systems, different parts of the plant—such as the leaves, fruits, and roots—have been used for a variety of ailments. Specifically for constipation in children, there are anecdotal and ethnobotanical reports suggesting that infusions or decoctions of pandan leaves or fruits have been used as mild laxatives or to promote bowel movements. However, these practices are based mainly on local folklore and traditional herbal medicine rather than rigorous clinical evaluation.

Scientific literature provides very limited data regarding the laxative effect of Pandanus tectorius or its use for childhood constipation. Most available studies on the plant focus on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, or antimicrobial properties. There is a lack of controlled studies or pharmacological research validating its effectiveness or safety as a treatment for constipation, especially in pediatric populations. Therefore, while its use for this purpose is rooted in tradition, the actual evidence base is weak, and it is not recognized in conventional or evidence-based pediatric care guidelines.
