Seaweed has been traditionally used in various cultures, particularly in East Asia, as a remedy for constipation, including in children. The primary reason for its use is its high fiber content, especially soluble fibers such as alginates, carrageenan, and agar, which are known to promote bowel movements by increasing stool bulk and moisture. Historical records and ethnobotanical surveys note the use of seaweed in traditional diets and remedies to alleviate digestive issues and promote regularity. For example, in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, certain seaweeds have been incorporated into soups and porridges for children to support digestive health and prevent constipation. However, while the traditional use is well-documented, scientific studies specifically evaluating the effectiveness of seaweed for treating constipation in children are limited. Existing research tends to focus on adults, and while some small studies and case reports suggest that dietary seaweed can improve bowel regularity due to its fiber content, robust, large-scale clinical trials in pediatric populations are lacking. Therefore, while there is a reasonable traditional basis for its use and a plausible mechanism of action via increased fiber, the overall quality of scientific evidence supporting its efficacy in children specifically is currently low.
