Evidence supporting the use of: Prebiotic blend (proprietary)
For the health condition: Constipation (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Prebiotic blends, which commonly include ingredients such as inulin, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), and galactooligosaccharides (GOS), are supported by growing scientific evidence for their use in managing constipation in children. Prebiotics are non-digestible food components that stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial gut bacteria, particularly bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. These bacteria play an important role in maintaining gut health and promoting regular bowel movements. Several randomized controlled trials and reviews, including publications in journals such as Pediatrics and Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, have shown that prebiotic supplementation can increase stool frequency and improve stool consistency in constipated children. The mechanism is thought to involve fermentation of prebiotics by colonic bacteria, leading to increased production of short-chain fatty acids, which in turn stimulate colonic motility and water retention in the stool, making it softer and easier to pass.
Despite these promising results, evidence is not universally strong; study sizes are often small and prebiotic types and doses vary. The European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) acknowledges potential benefits, but calls for more research before recommending prebiotics as first-line therapy. Nevertheless, the use of prebiotic blends to support constipation in children is grounded in scientific studies, and they are sometimes used as adjuncts to dietary and lifestyle measures for pediatric constipation.
