Evidence supporting the use of: Plantain (unspecifed)
For the health condition: Constipation (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Plantain, generally referring to Plantago ovata (psyllium husk), is scientifically validated for the management of constipation, including in children. Psyllium is a soluble fiber that absorbs water in the gut, forming a viscous gel that increases stool bulk and moisture, leading to improved bowel movements. Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses in both adults and pediatric populations have demonstrated its efficacy in softening stools and increasing stool frequency, making it a recommended first-line therapy for functional constipation in children by organizations such as the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN).
A 2014 systematic review published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition found that fiber supplementation, including psyllium, improved symptoms of constipation in children. However, the overall quality of pediatric-specific evidence is moderate, with some studies limited by small sample sizes or short durations. Nevertheless, the mechanism of action is well-established, and psyllium is commonly used in commercial pediatric fiber supplements. Other types of plantain (such as Plantago major) are not well-studied for this indication, so the evidence primarily applies to Plantago ovata (psyllium). Adverse effects are uncommon but may include mild bloating or gas. Overall, scientific evidence supports the use of plantain (psyllium) for childhood constipation, though best results are seen with adequate hydration.
