Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Digestion resistant dextrin (DRD), also known as resistant maltodextrin, is a type of soluble dietary fiber derived from corn or wheat starch. Its use for supporting or treating constipation in children is justified by scientific evidence, though the strength of the evidence is moderate (rated 3 out of 5).

DRD passes through the upper gastrointestinal tract undigested and reaches the colon, where it is fermented by gut microbiota. This fermentation process increases stool bulk and water content, which can help alleviate constipation. Several randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews in both adults and children have shown that supplementation with resistant dextrins can increase stool frequency and improve stool consistency. For example, a 2021 randomized controlled trial in preschool children with functional constipation found that daily supplementation with digestion resistant dextrin significantly increased the number of bowel movements compared to placebo, with minimal side effects.

Meta-analyses in adults and children have also concluded that soluble fibers like DRD are effective in improving bowel movement frequency, although the effect size may be moderate compared to other fiber types such as wheat bran. The World Gastroenterology Organisation and ESPGHAN (European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition) recognize fiber supplementation as a supportive measure for childhood constipation, though they do not specifically endorse DRD over other fibers.

In summary, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of digestion resistant dextrin for treating constipation in children, but it is not the most strongly supported intervention, and individual responses may vary.
