Synopsis: Cellulose is a type of insoluble dietary fiber derived from plant cell walls. It is not digested or absorbed in the human gastrointestinal tract, which allows it to increase stool bulk and promote regular bowel movements. The use of cellulose to manage constipation in children is supported by scientific understanding of fiber's physiological role. Clinical guidelines, such as those from the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN), recommend increasing dietary fiber intake, including sources like cellulose, as a first-line intervention for pediatric constipation (Tabbers et al., JPGN 2014). Several studies demonstrate that increasing insoluble fiber in the diet can improve stool frequency and consistency in children with functional constipation. However, the direct evidence for purified cellulose supplements is less extensive compared to studies on general dietary fiber or other fiber types. Cellulose is considered safe and well-tolerated in pediatric populations, and its use is generally extrapolated from studies on dietary fiber. Overall, cellulose use in childhood constipation is scientifically justified, though most evidence is indirect or based on broader fiber research, rather than cellulose alone. Thus, the strength of evidence is moderate (rated 3/5).
