The scientific rationale is that insoluble fiber increases stool bulk and promotes intestinal motility, which can help alleviate constipation. Several clinical studies and reviews have examined the efficacy of fiber supplementation, including bran, in pediatric constipation. For example, a systematic review published in Pediatrics (2001) found that increased dietary fiber can be beneficial for some children with functional constipation, though results across studies are variable. More recent guidelines, such as those from the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN), suggest that while fiber, including bran, is safe and may be helpful, the evidence is not uniformly strong; some children respond, while others do not.
