Evidence supporting the use of: Bifobacterium (mixed)
For the health condition: Constipation (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Bifidobacterium (mixed strains) has some scientific support for use in treating or supporting constipation in children. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have examined the effects of Bifidobacterium-containing probiotics on childhood constipation, particularly functional constipation. The proposed mechanism is that these probiotics may help rebalance gut microbiota, enhance short-chain fatty acid production, and improve colonic motility.
A 2017 meta-analysis (Wang et al., Medicine (Baltimore)) found that certain probiotic strains, including Bifidobacterium, improved stool frequency in children with constipation, although the effect size varied and not all studies showed significant improvement. Similarly, a 2018 systematic review (Tabbers et al., Cochrane Database Syst Rev) concluded that the evidence is low to moderate in quality and that, while some benefits are seen, results are inconsistent. Guidelines from the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) state that evidence is insufficient to recommend probiotics as standard therapy, but they acknowledge some studies show potential.
In summary, there is moderate scientific evidence—though not robust consensus—that mixed Bifidobacterium strains may help with childhood constipation. These probiotics are considered safe, but their effectiveness varies by strain and individual, and they are not a first-line treatment according to major pediatric guidelines.
