Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is primarily used in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments, including digestive issues. In folk medicine, thyme has been used as a carminative and digestive tonic, believed to relieve symptoms such as indigestion, bloating, and in some cases, constipation. The rationale is that thyme contains essential oils, such as thymol, which are thought to stimulate the digestive tract and potentially improve gastrointestinal motility. However, these uses are based largely on anecdotal evidence and longstanding herbal traditions, rather than rigorously controlled clinical trials.

Scientific evidence supporting thyme specifically for the treatment or support of constipation in adults is minimal to nonexistent. Most research on thyme focuses on its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties rather than its effects on bowel function. A few animal studies suggest that thyme extracts might influence gut motility, but these findings have not been validated in human clinical trials for constipation.
