Lactobacillus bulgaricus is a probiotic bacterium commonly used in the fermentation of yogurt and other dairy products. Its use to support or treat constipation in adults is primarily based on scientific interest in probiotics’ effects on gut health and motility. Several clinical studies and meta-analyses have evaluated the role of probiotics in relieving constipation, although most research has focused on multi-strain probiotic formulations rather than L. bulgaricus alone. Some evidence suggests that probiotics, including L. bulgaricus, may help improve stool frequency and consistency by modulating the gut microbiota, increasing short-chain fatty acid production, and enhancing intestinal motility. However, the strength of evidence specifically for L. bulgaricus as a single agent is limited.

A few randomized controlled trials have included L. bulgaricus in combination with other bacteria (such as Streptococcus thermophilus and Bifidobacterium species) and reported modest improvements in bowel movements and symptom relief in adults with functional constipation. The European Food Safety Authority recognizes L. bulgaricus as safe, and it is widely consumed in traditional diets, but regulatory agencies have not approved health claims specifically for constipation relief. Overall, while the use of L. bulgaricus for constipation in adults is supported by some preliminary scientific data, the evidence is considered weak to moderate and is stronger for multi-strain probiotics than for L. bulgaricus alone.
