Enzyme blends, typically containing proteases, lipases, amylases, and sometimes cellulases or other plant-derived enzymes, are primarily marketed for digestive health. The rationale for their use in constipation is based on the premise that improved digestion and breakdown of food may reduce gastrointestinal discomfort and support regular bowel movements. Some studies suggest that digestive enzyme supplementation can help alleviate symptoms of indigestion, bloating, and overall gastrointestinal function, especially in individuals with pancreatic insufficiency or specific enzyme deficiencies. However, the evidence specifically connecting enzyme blends to relief of constipation in otherwise healthy adults is quite limited. Most research is focused on populations with diagnosed digestive enzyme deficiencies or disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, where enzyme supplementation may help with stool consistency and gut motility indirectly by improving digestion. There are a handful of small, preliminary trials and anecdotal reports suggesting a benefit in broader populations, but high-quality, large-scale clinical trials are lacking.
