Bifidobacteria is a genus of probiotic bacteria frequently used in supplements aimed at supporting digestive health, including the management of constipation in adults. There is a moderate and growing body of scientific evidence suggesting that certain strains of Bifidobacteria may help alleviate symptoms of constipation. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that supplementation with specific strains such as Bifidobacterium lactis (notably DN-173 010 and HN019) can increase stool frequency and improve stool consistency in adults with functional constipation. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews (e.g., Dimidi et al., 2014; Miller et al., 2017) have concluded that Bifidobacteria-containing probiotics are associated with mild but significant improvements in constipation symptoms compared to placebo.
The proposed mechanisms include modulation of gut microbiota composition, production of short-chain fatty acids (which can stimulate intestinal motility), and enhancement of mucosal barrier function. However, not all studies show benefit, and the efficacy appears to be strain-specific and dependent on dosage and duration of use. Guidelines from some gastroenterology societies note the potential benefit but also highlight the need for more standardized, larger studies to confirm efficacy and determine optimal strains.
