Zinc has been studied for its potential benefits in treating conjunctivitis, particularly due to its known antimicrobial and immune-modulating properties. Scientific research indicates that zinc plays a role in maintaining ocular health, and its deficiency has been associated with impaired immune responses and increased susceptibility to infections, including those affecting the eye. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that zinc can inhibit the replication of certain viruses and bacteria implicated in conjunctivitis. Additionally, zinc-containing eye drops have been shown to reduce symptoms of conjunctivitis in a limited number of clinical trials. For instance, zinc sulfate eye drops were once commonly used in the management of conjunctivitis, with some reports describing reduced severity and duration of symptoms. However, the overall quality of evidence is limited, with few well-designed randomized controlled trials directly evaluating zinc's efficacy compared to standard therapies. Most current clinical guidelines do not specifically recommend zinc supplementation or topical zinc for conjunctivitis, favoring other established treatments such as topical antibiotics (for bacterial cases) or supportive care. Therefore, while there is a plausible scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence, the use of zinc for conjunctivitis is not strongly supported by high-quality clinical data. The evidence remains suggestive but not conclusive, justifying a modest rating of 2 out of 5.
