Terpenes are a large and diverse class of organic compounds produced by various plants, particularly conifers and citrus. The use of certain terpenes, such as those found in eucalyptus oil (notably eucalyptol), camphor, and menthol, has a long history in traditional medicine for the relief of sinus congestion and related respiratory symptoms. These terpenes are commonly used in vapor rubs, inhalants, and essential oil blends aimed at clearing nasal passages. Their traditional use is often attributed to their strong aromatic properties, which can create a sensation of improved airflow or cooling when inhaled. However, while some small studies have suggested mild decongestant or soothing effects, the overall scientific evidence supporting their efficacy for sinus congestion is limited and generally of low quality. Most benefits appear to be subjective, relating to the perception of improved breathing rather than a measurable reduction in congestion. Nonetheless, the longstanding use of terpene-rich preparations for this purpose is well-documented in folk and herbal medicine traditions around the world. Caution is advised, as concentrated essential oils can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals if not used properly.
