Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) has been traditionally used in herbal medicine to help alleviate symptoms of nasal and sinus congestion. This use is largely rooted in folk medicine practices, especially in regions where aromatic herbs are employed for their perceived soothing and decongestant properties. Spearmint leaves contain menthol, although in much lower concentrations compared to peppermint. Menthol is known for its cooling sensation and is thought to help open up nasal passages, making breathing feel easier; however, this effect is primarily sensory rather than physiological.

There is a lack of robust scientific evidence specifically supporting spearmint's efficacy for treating sinus congestion. Most studies and clinical trials examining menthol's effects on congestion have focused on peppermint or pure menthol, not spearmint. These studies suggest that while menthol may produce a subjective feeling of improved airflow, it does not actually reduce nasal resistance or clear congestion. Therefore, spearmint's use for this purpose remains primarily traditional, with little direct scientific validation. Overall, while spearmint is safe to use in moderate amounts and may offer a pleasant aroma and sensation, its actual therapeutic impact on sinus congestion is minimal according to current research.
