Sophora refers to a genus of plants, with Sophora flavescens ("Ku Shen") being the most commonly referenced species in traditional herbal medicine. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Sophora species—especially Sophora flavescens—have been used for various indications, most notably for their anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antipruritic properties. While Sophora is not a primary herb for treating sinus congestion, some traditional formulations may include it as a supportive ingredient due to its purported ability to "clear heat" and "dry dampness," which are TCM concepts sometimes related to phlegm and congestion.

However, direct use of Sophora for sinus congestion or "nasal congestion" is not strongly emphasized in classical texts. Rather, its use is more common in formulations for skin diseases, gastrointestinal issues, or as an adjunct in broader anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial herbal combinations. There is limited anecdotal or secondary traditional reference to its inclusion in formulas for upper respiratory issues, but it is not a principal herb for this condition.

Scientific evidence supporting the use of Sophora spp. for sinus congestion is minimal. While certain alkaloids and flavonoids from these plants demonstrate anti-inflammatory properties in vitro or in animal models, there is no robust clinical evidence for efficacy in treating sinus congestion in humans.
