Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) has a longstanding history of traditional use among Native American tribes for various respiratory ailments, including sinus congestion. The plant was often used in the form of smudging, teas, or inhaled steam to help clear the sinuses and ease breathing. The aromatic compounds found in sagebrush, particularly volatile oils like camphor and eucalyptol, are believed to have decongestant properties, which may provide temporary relief from congestion when inhaled. However, there is very limited scientific research specifically examining the effectiveness of sagebrush for treating sinus congestion or related respiratory conditions. Most available information is based on ethnobotanical and historical accounts rather than clinical evidence. No well-designed clinical trials have been conducted to validate its efficacy or safety for this indication. Therefore, while the use of sagebrush for sinus congestion is primarily justified by tradition, the overall quality and strength of evidence supporting this use is weak.
