Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora), often confused with Ravensara, is traditionally used in aromatherapy, particularly in France, for supporting respiratory health, including the relief of sinus congestion. The essential oil is valued for its purported antiviral, expectorant, and mucolytic properties. Historically, practitioners have used Ravintsara oil in steam inhalations and topical applications to ease breathing and promote sinus drainage during colds or upper respiratory infections. The traditional rationale centers on the oil’s high content of 1,8-cineole (also known as eucalyptol), a compound recognized for its ability to help open the airways and reduce mucus production. However, while there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of 1,8-cineole from sources such as eucalyptus oil for respiratory symptoms, specific clinical trials on Ravintsara oil itself are lacking. Most of the support for its use in sinus congestion comes from traditional herbal medicine and anecdotal reports rather than robust clinical research. As such, while its use is grounded in tradition and some extrapolation from related compounds, high-quality scientific validation for Ravintsara’s efficacy in treating sinus congestion is limited.
