Evidence supporting the use of: Flavones (various)
For the health condition: Congestion (sinus)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Flavones, a subclass of flavonoids found in many fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants, have been studied for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Scientific evidence suggests that flavones, such as apigenin and luteolin, can modulate inflammatory pathways, inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and stabilize mast cells, all of which may contribute to reducing symptoms associated with sinus congestion. Some animal and in vitro studies have shown that flavones can decrease mucosal inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness, which are relevant mechanisms in sinus congestion. However, direct clinical evidence in humans specifically addressing flavones for sinus congestion is limited. Most of the available data comes from broader studies on flavonoids or plant extracts rich in flavones rather than isolated flavone compounds. Thus, while the underlying biological rationale is supported by preclinical research and some indirect human data, robust clinical trials are lacking. As a result, the evidence for using flavones to treat or support sinus congestion can be considered preliminary but plausible based on their known pharmacological actions.
