Evidence supporting the use of: Sagebrush
For the health condition: Congestion (lungs)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) has a long history of use in traditional Native American medicine, including for respiratory complaints such as lung congestion, coughs, and colds. Various tribes, such as the Navajo and Shoshone, prepared infusions or teas from the leaves and stems, which were consumed or inhaled as steam to help clear the lungs and ease breathing. The plant contains volatile oils, such as camphor and eucalyptol, which have mild expectorant and antimicrobial properties, and may contribute to symptomatic relief.
However, there is very limited scientific research specifically examining the effectiveness of sagebrush for treating lung congestion in humans. Most available evidence comes from ethnobotanical sources and traditional use records rather than controlled clinical trials. Some laboratory studies have shown that related Artemisia species possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, but these findings cannot be directly extrapolated to the treatment of lung congestion in people.
In summary, while sagebrush is traditionally used for lung congestion, the evidence supporting its efficacy is weak and largely anecdotal. There is not enough scientific validation to confidently recommend its use for this purpose.
