Evidence supporting the use of: Quercetin
For the health condition: Congestion (lungs)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Quercetin is a plant flavonoid found in many fruits and vegetables and is sometimes promoted for lung congestion due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Scientific evidence supporting the use of quercetin for lung congestion is limited but emerging, mostly based on preclinical studies. Animal and cell-based research has shown that quercetin may inhibit the release of histamine and pro-inflammatory cytokines, which can contribute to airway inflammation and mucus production. For example, a study published in Pulmonary Pharmacology & Therapeutics (2011) demonstrated that quercetin reduced airway hyperresponsiveness and inflammation in a mouse model of allergic asthma.
However, human clinical trials specifically targeting lung congestion are scarce. Some small studies have explored quercetin’s effects on respiratory infections or conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with mixed or inconclusive results. Overall, while quercetin has a theoretical basis for alleviating lung congestion due to its anti-inflammatory actions, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Most recommendations are extrapolated from laboratory or animal models rather than direct clinical trials. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary data, the evidence supporting quercetin’s use for lung congestion is weak and should be considered investigational.
