Evidence supporting the use of: Peucedanum
For the health condition: Congestion (lungs)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Peucedanum, a genus within the Apiaceae family, has a long history of traditional use in herbal medicine systems, particularly in East Asia and Europe, for the treatment of respiratory ailments including lung congestion. Several species, such as Peucedanum praeruptorum (known as Qian Hu in Traditional Chinese Medicine), have been used to "dispel phlegm," "relieve cough," and "clear lung heat." Historical texts and pharmacopeias describe its use in decoctions and powders for conditions characterized by chest congestion and productive coughs, indicating a well-established traditional application. The root is often the part used for these purposes.
While some laboratory studies have explored the pharmacological actions of Peucedanum species—identifying compounds like coumarins with potential anti-inflammatory and spasmolytic effects—rigorous clinical trials in humans are lacking. The available evidence from animal and in vitro studies suggests possible mechanisms that could support its use in respiratory conditions, but the data are insufficient to draw firm scientific conclusions. Therefore, the use of Peucedanum for lung congestion remains primarily rooted in traditional practice, with limited scientific validation at this time.
