Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is commonly used as a remedy for respiratory conditions, including lung congestion, coughs, and bronchitis. Traditional practitioners often use cardamom in herbal formulations or as a tea, believing its warming and aromatic properties help "open" the chest and clear mucus. The essential oils in cardamom, primarily cineole (also known as eucalyptol), are thought to act as mild expectorants, helping to loosen and expel phlegm from the lungs.

Scientific validation for cardamom’s use in treating lung congestion is limited. While cardamom essential oil contains compounds with anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, most studies have been conducted in vitro or in animal models, not in humans. Some evidence suggests that inhalation of cardamom’s volatile oils may soothe irritated airways, but the data is not robust or specific to congestion relief. Thus, while tradition strongly supports its use, scientific evidence is currently weak and more clinical research would be needed to confirm these effects. Cardamom may provide mild symptomatic relief, but it should not be relied upon as a primary treatment for significant respiratory conditions.
